Big blocks of olive oil based soap have been crafted in the South of France since the middle ages. In 1688, Louis XIV – the Sun King himself, passed a law that only soaps made according to strict, ancient methods could bear the famous mark .. “Savon de Marseille.”

Authentic Marseille soap is a 100 % natural, exclusively made with vegetable oils, with no animal fats, colouring or artificial additives. It must contain a minimum of 72% oil with the percentage stamped on each bar of soap. The weight stamp is ancient practice which allowed households to compare prices and plan their supplies.
